Dominic Smith 2018 Topps Stadium Card |
As Jon Heyman, Andy Martino and other have reported the proposed trade of Dominic Smith from the Mets to the San Diego Padres for Chris Paddack and Eric Hosmer has been called off.
Earlier Jon Heyman reported that Eric Hosmer gained full no trade value if he was traded which would have made flipping to another team hard to do.
As Andy Martino reports, the Mets are still having conversations with other teams.
The sides had previously discussed a deal that would send Dom Smith to San Diego for Eric Hosmer, Chris Paddack, and Emilio Pagán.@martinonyc reports that the Mets had weighed the trade and decided against making it. pic.twitter.com/SGtBKTjOqJ

Proposed Mets-Padres deal has hit a snag, and may be off entitrely

Hosmer, however, cannot be flipped without his approval. If traded once, he gains FTNP (full no-trade protection). A 3-team trade would be doable though, as long as the team he’s going to is one of 19 not on his list. https://t.co/q9vlixl4bV

As you’ve probably heard, the much discussed Padres-Mets deal is off. Wil Myers on Eric Hosmer: “It sounds like he’s going to stay with us, which is great.” Myers said the players basically knew when Hosmer came out on the field and started working out with them.

Eric Hosmer, when contacted by @TheAthletic, said he’s ready to play baseball, “wherever that is.” Declined further comment. Deal between Padres and Mets involving him is off, as first reported by @JonHeyman and @JoelSherman1.

The Mets do need more pitching depth. But they were about to take on a player/contract (Hosmer) they didn’t want for decent but not great depth. We are not privy to other options which could look worse. Still, they have to stay patient and hope better alternatives come along.

Mets are still having trade conversations with the other clubs but nothing appears imminent. Smith situation will have to be dealt with but that’s why they pay Buck the big … bucks
