Game Recap: Flying Tigers Pull Away Late, Beat Mets 6-3


 

Williams draws walk for ninth straight game

 

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 20, 2023) – The Lakeland Flying Tigers used a late surge to defeat the St. Lucie Mets 6-3 at Clover Park on Thursday night (Box Score).

 

With the game tied 2-2 in the seventh inning, Moises Valero hit a two-out RBI single off Jawilme Ramirez to put Lakeland up 3-2. Lazaro Benitez followed with RBI double off Miguel Alfonseca to make it 4-2.

 

The Mets rallied back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Rhylan Thomas led off with a double and Jett Williams hit a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, later in the inning with the tying run at third, reliever Cam Brown induced a double play from Adrian Hernandez to end the inning and preserve the Lakeland lead.

 

The Flying Tigers cashed in a leadoff hit by pitch in the eighth and a leadoff walk in the ninth for insurance runs to go up 6-3.

 

The Mets made three errors that led to four unearned runs. They also walked six batters and plunked three more.

 

Mets starter Jordany Ventura struck out seven over 3.0 innings. He gave up one unearned run.

 

Ramirez suffered the loss. He scattered five hits and three runs, all unearned, over 3.2 innings.

 

Cleiverth Perez pitched two innings of relief behind starter Troy Melton to get the win for the Flying Tigers.

 

The Mets offense put the leadoff runner on base in each of the first eight innings. However, the Mets couldn't capitalize as the next two batters made outs in six of those innings.

 

Thomas went 3 for 4 with a double and run.

 

Eduardo Salazar was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Both of his hits were two-out RBI hits that tied the game in the second and sixth innings.

 

Williams went 1 for 4 with a single and a walk. He has now drawn a walk in nine consecutive games.

 

The Mets (4-8) and Flying Tigers (6-6) continue their series at Clover Park on Friday. First pitch is 6:10 p.m.
