Game Recap and Highlights: Four-Run Sixth Leads Ponies to Come-From-Behind Win over Portland

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (20-21, 55-55) scored four runs in the sixth inning and came from behind to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-4, on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium. Portland leads the series 2-1.

Binghamton trailed 3-1 in the sixth inning and rallied to take the lead in the frame. Luisangel Acuña drew a walk on a pitch clock violation to lead off the inning. Drew Gilbert followed with a hustle double. 

With the potential tying runs on second and third base, JT Schwartz ripped a game-tying two-run single that made it 3-3. Schwartz grabbed second base on a wild pitch and Rowdey Jordan followed with a go-ahead RBI triple that gave the Ponies a 4-3 lead. Later in the frame, Mateo Gil ripped an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-3.

Tyler Thomas came in for the four-out save and recorded two strikeouts, en route to his third save.

The Ponies took the lead two batters into the first inning. Acuña led off with an infield single and then stole second base and reached third on a throwing error. Gilbert drove him in with a sacrifice fly that made it 1-0.

Portland (21-21, 61-50) tied the game in the third with an RBI single from Nathan Hickey that made it 1-1. The Sea Dogs took the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Chase Meidroth and an RBI single from Hickey that made it 3-1.

Luis Moreno (8-5) earned the win and struck out eight batters over six innings.

The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Sea Dogs at Mirabito Stadium on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m. on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Gilbert extended his hit streak to five games…Acuña scored twice…Schwartz had his second-straight multi-hit game and 14th of the season…Schwartz recorded his 10th multi-RBI game.
