PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (September 7, 2023) – On the opening night of the NFL season, the St. Lucie Mets defeated the Daytona Tortugas with a football-like score of 14-7 at Clover Park.

Mets left fielder Kellum Clark had the best game of his young pro career, going 3 for 3 with a homer, two singles and two walks. He reached base all five times he came to the plate, recorded four RBI and scored twice. Clark was the Mets 20th round draft pick in July out of Mississippi State.

All nine Mets batters reached base for the second time in three games this week. The Mets pounded out nine hits, drew 12 walks and were hit by a pitch three times. Tortugas pitchers uncorked three wild pitches and the Daytona defense committed three errors.

Nick Morabito went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and two walks. He scored two runs.

The Mets overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to match their biggest scoring inning of the season. Ronald Hernandez got the Mets on the board on a ground ball that was thrown away for an error by first baseman Yassel Pino. Two runs scored on the play to tie the game 2-2. Morabito was awarded home on a balk by starting pitcher Jared Lyons to give the Mets the lead.

Yeral Martinez clubbed a RBI double that made it 4-2. Karell Paz followed with a two-out, two-run double for a 6-2 advantage. Paz stole third base and scored when catcher Connor Burns’ attempt to throw him out skipped into left field.

Pino hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 7-4. Clark countered with his own two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth that put the Mets back up by five, 9-4. It was the first pro homer for Clark.

Daytona scored three runs against Wilson Esterlin in the sixth inning. Burns hit a solo homer and Ethan O’Donnell hit a two-run homer to cut the Tortugas deficit to 9-7. It was O’Donnell’s fourth straight game with a home run.

Again the Mets answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Nicolo Pinazzi loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. He then plunked Martinez to force in a run that pushed the Mets lead to 10-7. Clark followed with a two-run single for a 12-7 advantage.

The Mets capped the scoring in the eighth when Jose Hernandez scored on a throwing error and Martinez scored from third base on a wild pitch to make it 14-7.

On a night when pitchers struggled, Mets reliever Ramon Henriquez shined. He pitched 4.0 shutout innings to end the game and earn the win. He gave up just two hits, walked three and struck out three.

Mets starter Kade Morris gave up one run on one hit in 2.1 innings. He walked two and struck out three in his team debut. Morris was drafted by the Mets in the third round in July out of Nevada

Lyons took the loss for the Tortugas. He was knocked out of the game at 2.2 innings after giving up five runs (two earned). He allowed three hits and walked four.

The Mets (43-83, 19-42) and Tortugas (55-71, 26-35) play the fourth game of their series at Clover Park on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
