JUPITER, Fla. (May 18, 2024) – The Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the St. Lucie Mets 13-1 on Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The win clinched the series victory for the Cardinals and handed the Mets their largest margin of defeat this season.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning against Mets starter Wyatt Hudepohl. Miguel Villarroel hit a RBI double and Villarroel later scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs to make it 2-0.

 

The Cardinals scored two more runs in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Sammy Hernandez and a bases loaded walk issued by Austin Troesser. Troesser recovered to strike out three in a row with the bases loaded to keep it a 4-0 deficit.

 

Palm Beach broke the game open with nine runs in the sixth inning. Most of the damage was done with two outs against reliever Cristofer Gomez, who was making his team debut. Villarroel hit his second RBI double, Chase Davis hit a two-run single, Sammy Hernandez hit a two-run double and Trey Paige hit a RBI double to cap the scoring and make it 13-0.

 

The Mets got on the board in the seventh. Colin Houck singled and went on to score on a RBI double by Ronald Hernandez.

 

Mets reliever Juan Arnaud pitched 2.0 inning with four strikeouts to finish the game out.

 

Palm Beach starter Chen-Wei Lin pitched 6.0 one-hit shutout innings. He walked two and struck out five.

 

Luis Gastelum pitched the final 3.0 innings for Palm Beach to earn a save.

 

Hernandez went 2 for 3 in the loss and extended his hitting streak to six games.

 

Jesus Baez went 0 for 4 to end his hitting streak at 17 games.

 

The Mets (13-25) and Cardinals (22-16) conclude their six-game series at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
