Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: Inside the Pete Alonso-Steve Cohen sit-down that brought slugger back to Mets. "On Tuesday, team owner Steve Cohen flew to Tampa — where Alonso resides — and along with president of baseball operations David Stearns, met with Alonso and the first baseman’s representative, Scott Boras. For about three hours the group convened at Stovall House, a social club to which Alonso belongs.A day later, Alonso agreed to a two-year contract worth $54 million for a return to the Mets. The deal includes an opt-out after the first season and $10 million signing bonus." (Subscription Required)

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Steve Cohen ‘needed’ the Pete Alonso-Mets reunion to happen. "Mets owner Steve Cohen suggested the secret sit-down with Pete Alonso in Tampa on Tuesday, and that may have been the breakthrough the sides needed. 'I really wanted to humanize the negotiations,' Cohen told The Post. 'I wanted him to hear it straight from me — two human beings having a real conversation.'”

Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: Pete Alonso deal opens up intriguing trade possibility for Mets. "[The Pete Alonso contract gives] them at least another season of Alonso at first and Mark Vientos at third, which turns Luisangel Acuna, Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio from competing for the hot corner job into either bench pieces or Syracuse Mets since each has one more minor league option. Or … Does that trio become even more prominent trade chips?...All three were discussed with the White Sox when the Mets were trying to get Garrett Crochet in December — so even before Alonso’s return. The Mets also talked at that time to San Diego about Dylan Cease." (Subscription Required)

Tim Healey Newsday; Mets spring training preview: Five storylines heading into 2025. "Are there any more moves on the way? How does Alonso feel about his, ahem, interesting offseason? What is Kodai Senga’s status? How will the Mets handle a glut of infielders? Is it really all this easy and good?"

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: What Pete Alonso adds to Mets lineup with lofty expectations entering 2025. "Not to be hyperbolic, but the Mets could be on the verge of history. According to MLB Network’s Sarah Langs, the Mets have never had three players hit 30 or more home runs in a season, but three hitters are projected to hit 30 dingers in 2025: Juan Soto (35), Mark Vientos (33) and Pete Alonso (36). This illustrates the impact of Alonso’s return. Realistically, the Mets could be looking at four 30-homer hitters with the potential for five. Francisco Lindor is coming off back-to-back seasons of 30 or more, and if Brandon Nimmo taps into the power he did two years ago, he could reach the same peak, or at least come close to it."

Will Sammon The Athletic: Farm system heat check: What’s the immediate and future outlook for the New York Mets. "Prospects most likely to impact 2025 team: Sproat, Tidwell, Mauricio, Acuña. "Sproat should debut at some point in the second half of the season. He will start the year in Triple A, where he had a 7.53 ERA in seven starts in 2024 after dominating the previous two levels within the same year. Tidwell and Dom Hamel also may merit consideration whenever the Mets need to tap into their pitching depth." (Subscription Required)

Ken Rosenthal The Athletic: MLB owners taking a hard-line stance on a salary cap would be a mistake. "The debate over whether a cap would be good for baseball is again taking place not just among owners, but also among fans. While the discussion is not unreasonable, players find the idea unacceptable, just as they did when they went on strike over the issue in 1994-95. Their opposition remains so vehement, the owners know if they take a hard-line stance on a cap, it almost certainly would lead to a shutdown of the sport after the current collective-bargaining agreement expires in December 2026." (Subscription Required)

NY Daily News: MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says fans are concerned about lack of salary cap. "MLB’s growing discourse about a lack of salary cap has extended to the fans. That’s according to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, who said Thursday fans have sent emails voicing their concerns about their teams’ abilities to compete in the current financial landscape."

The Athletic: If ESPN opts out of TV deal, MLB warns it could walk away: source. "Major League Baseball is warning that it could walk away from ESPN if the network opts out of their national TV deal next month. After four decades of partnership, a new deal with ESPN would be unlikely following an opt out, a person briefed on the league’s thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly said Thursday. ESPN, which is carrying Sunday Night Baseball for a 36th season this year, is locked in as baseball’s partner for 2025 either way. To be determined is the fate of the final three years of the seven-year contract, the 2026-28 seasons." (Subscription Required)
