FLUSHING, N.Y., February 6, 2023 - The New York Mets today announced the team has claimed RHP Sam Coonrod off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies and designated outfielder Khalil Lee for assignment.
Coonrod, 30, is 7-5 with five saves, a 5.27 ERA (57 earned runs/97.1 innings) and 95 strikeouts in 105 combined major league games between the San Francisco Giants (2019-2020) and Phillies (2021-2022).
The 6-1, 225-pounder appeared in 12
games for Philadelphia last season. He was 2-2 with two saves and a 4.04 ERA
(19 earned runs/42.1 innings) in 42 games for the Phillies in 2021.

To make room for Coonrod, the Mets DFA'd OF Khalil Lee. The Mets acquired Khalil on February 10, 2021 as part of a three team trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Royals. The Mets gave up Josh Winkowski (who was acquired as part of the Steven Matz to Toronto trade) along with minor league prospect Freddy Valdez.
Earlier this month the NY Post reported that Mets’ Khalil Lee was accused of assaulting, choking ex-girlfriend. "Syracuse police issued a warrant for Lee, 24, on the charge of criminal obstruction of breath, Syracuse.com reported. A lawsuit was also filed in the Northern District of New York that named Lee on allegations that he abused his former girlfriend — including allegedly kicking her to the ground and choking her — while playing for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets last season."
Khalil Lee played mostly for AAA Syracuse these last two years. In September 2021 he hit .311/.440/.635 - 1.075 OPS with 6 HRs and 13 RBIs. That helped Khalil be named as a 2021 Triple-A East League All Star.
He did make an 11 game appearance for the Mets in 2021 and a 2 game stint in 2022. Overall in 20 at bats Khalil slashed .100/.100/.300 - with 2 hits and 13 Ks.
Per FanGraphs, Sam Coonrod has one minor league option left.
