[NESN] - Who Else? Four Free Agents Red Sox Still Can Target (Besides Alex Bregman)
The Boston Red Sox have dug their hands in the trade market and free agency this offseason, and even with less than six weeks until pitchers and catchers report for spring training, there are plenty of options left to explore. Boston has been linked to free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, a potential solution for […]

[Bleacher Nation] - Lukewarm Stove: An “Inevitable” Cubs Move, Tanner Scott, Alex Bregman, Jack Flaherty, More
MLB RUMORS — I won’t complain about the pace of the market this year – that was probably our best December in half a decade (plus, the top starter on the market, Corbin Burnes, ) – but the pace has certainly slowed through the holidays. Not just the action, but the rumors too. Hopefully, when everyone’s more fully back to work (Monday?), the new pace will match the intensity of the last month or so. I rather enjoyed that. And, hey, there are still plenty of , a handful of which have at least some credible (or reasonably theoretical (or even tenuous)) connection to the Chicago Cubs: Alex Bregman, Roki Sasaki, Jack Flaherty, Pete Alonso, Anthony Santander, Jeff Hoffman, Tanner Scott. And beyond them, there are still some big-time trade candidates like Luis Castillo, Dylan Cease, Pablo Lopez, etc. Lot of offseason to go. The Cubs Will Add a Starter Of the ten free agent and trade candidates named above, you may have noticed that five are starting pitchers. That was not by accident. The one Cubs move we more or less feel confident in projecting the rest of the way is , from that group or otherwise. , not mincing words: “Whether it’s a trade in the coming weeks or a late free-agent signing before the spring, it seems inevitable that one more starting pitcher will be added.” The Cubs are no doubt PRAYING for Roki Sasaki to join the squad, but because of the financial restrictions of international free agency (for amateurs), they can do only so much to make him pick Chicago. And I tend to think that we’re probably not going to see them pivot away to the trade market until they know for sure they’re not getting him. I know there’s some debate about this online, but the immediate pressure to add an IMPACT starting pitcher is greatly reduced by the presence of Roki Sasaki. I don’t know how that would not delay their willingness to deal. Likewise, and this is merely speculation: If the Cubs whiff on Roki Sasaki and can’t quite come together on a trade (always difficult … even with two willing parties), I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to jump immediately into the highest tier of the remaining free agent starters (i.e. Jack Flaherty and the like). Instead, I’d expect them to enact their familiar M.O., which is waiting to see who’s available closer to the start of Spring Training when more deals of value present themselves. By contrast, I do expect them to make a move in the bullpen (likely a solid one) before we get that deep into the offseason (and irrespective of Roki Sasaki’s decision). Tanner Scott and the Free-Agent Relievers To that end, let me also remind you that there are still a lot of really interesting free-agent relievers/closers out there. , here are the top remaining free-agent relievers next to their 2024 stats: Tanner Scott, LHP (1.75 ERA, 22 saves, 11 holds) Jeff Hoffman, RHP (2.17 ERA, 10 saves, 21 holds) Carlos Estevez, RHP (2.45 ERA, 26 saves) Kirby Yates, RHP (1.17 ERA, 33 saves, 2 holds) Of that group, , who’d make an excellent addition. Though Scott is probably the real prize. And because of that, according to Jon Morosi, he’ll likely be the first domino to fall (raising the bar for the other relievers). Morosi names the Dodgers and Braves as fits, for the latter, : The latest on LHP Tanner Scott's free agency according to ⬇️ — MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) I’d love the Cubs to go after Tanner Scott, especially considering how crucial this season has become (the only season the Cubs control Kyle Tucker). But I just don’t see it happening. Tanner Scott is going to get one of those four-year, $60+M deals the Cubs front office just seems to straight up refuse to give out to relievers. Someone like Yates, who’ll make good money, but on just a one or two-year deal, is a much more likely outcome. © Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports Alex Bregman’s Market Heating Up? Alex Bregman is arguably the top free agent available, and his market is finally starting to heat up. Most recently, those rumors have been in connection to the Detroit Tigers. , Evan Petzold writes that the Tigers “have strong interest in third baseman Alex Bregman,” going as far to say that they’re “all in on Bregman (as) … Both sides are engaged in ongoing discussions with mutual interest….” The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen reported similar mutual interest, but pumps the brakes on how close that really is. He also includes the Red Sox and Blue Jays in the mix, noting that the Tigers are not willing to go close to seven years or $200 million, if that is what Bregman still hopes to get. The are in on Alex Bregman, but nothing is imminent, says — Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) , the Cubs seem pretty unlikely here for Bregman, barring some massive change to his market. Jack Flaherty Now let’s circle back to the free-agent starting market, where Jack Flaherty awaits as the top available pitcher. As I said above, Flaherty is not a likely Cubs target, though he may necessarily precede any player in whom the Cubs would be interested. To that end, ...
