NY Post: Jeff Torborg, former Mets manager, dead at 83. "No cause of death was immediately announced, but in recent years Torborg had battled Parkinson’s disease...His stint managing the Mets was turbulent. After the team finished 70-92 under his guidance in 1992 — a unit that would later become known as “The Worst Team Money Could Buy” (the title of a book written by Bob Klapisch and John Harper about that squad) — Torborg was fired only 38 games into the next season and replaced by Dallas Green. The Mets were 13-25 at the time."
Jay Horwitz Mets Insider Blog: "He was such a gentlemen and handled a difficult time with us with grace and kindness. Jeff never turned down any of my interview requests even when times were tough."
MLB.com: Soto has sights set on Cooperstown -- and the numbers say he'll get there. "Prepare yourself. Through the 2040 season, Soto is projected for the following career totals: 151 OPS+; 103.2 WAR; 2,917 hits; 583 HR; 2,797 walks; 1,826 RBI."
NY Post: Cubs owner Tom Ricketts admits it’s ‘really hard to compete’ with splashy spending of Dodgers, Mets and Yankees. “Obviously, the Dodgers have a lot more resources, naturally, from smart business moves they made years ago. I don’t begrudge them any of that. Some teams just have outside resources that are funding their player moves and acquisitions, and that’s really hard to compete with. I understand when fans say, ‘How come you don’t spend like that?’ Because they think somehow we have all these dollars that the Dodgers have or the Mets have or the Yankees have and we just keep it. Which isn’t true at all. What happens is we try to break even every year, and that’s about it.”

1984 |
1984: The Chicago White Sox claim 39-year-old pitcher Tom Seaver from the New York Mets as compensation for the loss of free agent pitcher Dennis Lamp to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets left Seaver off their protected list assuming (wrongly) that no team would want to select the aging star, who finished 1983 with a 9-14 record and a 3.55 ERA. But Seaver will improve to 15-11 with the White Sox this season.
Faith and Fear in Flushing: "Saving Ron Gardenhire (Instead of Tom Seaver)". Greg Prince looks at all the players the Mets protected in 1984 not named Tom Seaver.
Three Years ago, after GM Jared Porter was fired and the Mets lost out on George Springer:
Metstradamus: The One That Escaped To The North. “But if you had told me after Steve Cohen and all his money took over the Mets that they would go 0-for-3 in the room with JT Realmuto, Trevor Bauer, and George Springer, I would have told you that you were out of your mind.”
Mike’s Mets: Thoughts on George Springer and Jared Porter.
Joel Sherman NY Post: “The Mets let Springer’s camp know over last weekend that they were willing to go to six years at $120 million, but no further. At that point, the Mets were pretty much out of contention, as Springer headed toward the six-year, $150 million pact he reached Wednesday with the Blue Jays.”
