Yesterday Morning the Mets announced that John Stearns had passed away. "John Stearns, a catcher played with the Mets for 10 years (1975-1984) and earned four All-Star selections, died late last night in Denver, CO after a long battle with cancer. Stearns also coached on the major league staff with the Mets from 2000-2001. He was 71. He is survived by his son, Justin, brothers, Richard and William and his sister, Carla."

Pirates (55-90) @ Mets (91-55), 7:10 pm

NYM: Chris Bassitt (#40, 33, RHP, 13-8, 3.44)
PIT: Bryse Wilson (#32, 24, RHP, 3-8, 6.03)

Brian Joura Mets360: "In a game that shouldn’t have been anywhere near this close, the Mets escaped with a 4-3 win over the Pirates Friday night."

Metstradamus:

The Inches We Need … "Taijuan Walker pitched 7 and 1/3 great innings tonight, and he did so while bringing his splitter back slowly. He was going primarily with the sinker/curve/fastball first time through the lineup, then slowly brought the spiltter back in, throwing 24 of them total out of 100 pitches."

Mike Puma NY Post: "Suddenly, the Mets are surging against teams they should beat. The victory improved them to 7-7 in a September stretch against teams with losing records, which included getting swept in three games by the Cubs to start the homestand. The Mets maintained their one-game lead on the Braves in the NL East."

The much-traveled veteran will hit a total of 26 home runs this year playing for the Mets (9), Padres (11), Angels (2), and the Bronx Bombers (4).

1982

In the bottom of the seventh at Shea Stadium, Dave Kingman knots the score at 2-2 against the Redbirds when he hits the final homer of his league-leading season total of 37. The 33 year-old Mets slugger will finish the season hitting just .204, the lowest batting average ever for a player who wins a home run crown.
