The Mets yesterday announced that 15 players were invited to Spring Training. The list includes top prospects C Kevin Parada and OF Alex RamÃrez as well as C Nick Meyer, RHP Eric Orze, RHP Grant Hartwig, and LHP Josh Walker.
From the same Press Release, the Mets announced that they had signed OF DJ Stewart "...spent parts of five major league seasons with the Orioles (2018-2022) and had 26 home runs and 73 RBI over 195 career big league games. Stewart appeared in a career-high 100 major league games in 2021 and belted 12 home runs with 33 RBI."
MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Sign DJ Stewart To Minor League Contract. "Baltimore outrighted the 29-year-old off their 40-man roster last April after he’d tallied just three big league plate appearances on the season. He was on and off the minor league injured list throughout the remainder of the year, only getting into 29 games for Triple-A Norfolk."
SNY.TV: Mets' farm system ranked in middle of MLB pack by The Athletic ahead of 2023 season. "The Mets' system is on the rise, but still a bit top-heavy."
SNY.TV: Already at spring training, Mets prospect Brett Baty spent part of offseason working on defense with Troy Tulowitzki. "Baty has a chance to crack the Mets' Opening Day roster."
SNY.TV: Should the Mets trade Carlos Carrasco? "The Mets might be able to get similar value from David Peterson or Tylor Megill, but trading Carrasco would be a risk."
Jon Heyman NY Post: Mets’ pursuit of Shohei Ohtani could be derailed by threat of tax rise. "The current 90 percent so-called “Steve Cohen tax” hasn’t deterred Cohen much...But one high-ranking exec predicts a “reckoning” in four years when the CBA expires that could make spending even costlier for Cohen...At 110 percent tax, a potential $50M Ohtani salary would cost him $105M annually. But other owners could press for even higher tax rates."
Jon Heyman NY Post: Kodai Senga also had iffy physical before Mets’ Carlos Correa saga. "New Mets pitcher Kodai Senga throws 100 mph and has a forkball so good it’s called a “ghost” pitch, he has a career 2.59 ERA and five rings in Japan before age 30. Yet, with a $75 million deal, he got slightly more than mid-rotation starter Taijuan Walker. The reason may be what sources say is an iffy medical. Folks in the know say it’s common for Japanese pitchers to show more wear on the arm earlier since star starters there throw more innings at younger ages."

"You would say 'I want one guy playing that spot 150 times a year.' Why is it acceptable to say I want 2 or 3 or 4 guys rotating?"

1999 | The Mets tell a surprised Tim McCarver that he will not be returning to the team's broadcast booth. The franchise's pitching legend Tom Seaver, who was in the television booth for the Yankees from 1989 to 1993, will replace the highly regarded, but outspoken 57 year-old broadcaster, who spent 16 years with the team doing local telecasts. |
2002 | Yankee catcher Jorge Posada (.277, 22, 95) signs a five-year, $51 million contract with a club option for a sixth season. The 30 year-old Bronx Bomber backstop, with an average annual value of more than $10 million, is the second-highest among major league catchers, trailing only the receiver Mike Piazza, who signed a seven-year, $91 million deal with the Mets in 1998 that averages $13 million annually. |
2009 | Oliver Perez agrees to a $36 million, three-year deal to stay with the Mets. The 29 year-old inconsistent southpaw, who has posted a 26-20 record with New York since being obtained from Pittsburgh during the 2006 season, will be part of the team's starting rotation. |
2011 | A lawsuit brought by the victims of Bernie Madoff name Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, contending the Mets owners' enriched themselves with many years of profitable investing in the Ponzi Scheme while ignoring many warnings that the payoffs might have been fraudulent. Speculation concerning the sale of the team, to meet the financial obligations caused by a possible $1 billion settlement, has started circulating in the sports and banking industries. |
2010: Nelson Figueroa strikes out 8 in a complete game 7 - 1 victory, leading Escogido over Hermosillo on the second day of the 2010 Caribbean Series. A solo home run by Carlos Valencia is the only blemish on Figueroa's record, while his teammate with the Mets last season, Fernando Martinez, hits a two-run homer for the winners.
