St. Lucie wins 5-3 (Box Score) and 8-7 (Box Score)
JUPITER, Fla. (April 14, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets extended their winning streak to three games by sweeping the Jupiter Hammerheads in a doubleheader on Friday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
The Mets won the first game 5-3, then defeated the Hammerheads 8-7 in game 2.
In game 1, the Mets raced out to a 5-0 lead then hung on at the very end.
The game started with a bang as Rhylan Thomas took a leadoff walk and Carlos Dominguez ripped a double off Jupiter starter Karson Milbrant. Jett Williams hit a run-scoring ground out, then later in the inning Kevin Villavicencio laced a two-out, two-run single for a 3-0 lead.
Dominguez extended the lead to 5-0 with a two-out, two-run homer off Milbrandt in the fifth inning.
The Hammerheads answered by scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Tanner Allen bashed a two-run triple against reliever Joe Joe Rodriguez. Jan Mercado then hit an infield single to plate Allen to make it 5-3 Mets.
Benito Garcia came in from the bullpen to get the final out of the fifth. Garcia stranded two runners in the sixth inning and stranded the bases loaded in the seventh inning to escape with the victory. Garcia struck out Noah Williamson to end the game with the tying run on second base and winning run on first base.
Garcia pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to get the win. Mets starter Jordany Ventura logged 3.1 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit. He walked four and struck out six.
Overall the three Mets pitchers walked 10 batters but still managed to limit Jupiter to three runs.
Dominguez went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double.
Villavicencio went 2 for 3. It was his third multi-hit game of the season.
Williams walked twice in three plate appearances.
In game 2, the Mets scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to sloppy frame by the Hammerheads. Junior Tilien scored on a throwing error by shortstop Javier Sanoja to tie the game 1-1. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Jupiter reliever Yeremin Lara was called for back-to-back balks to force home two runs that put the Mets ahead 3-1.
Eduardo Salazar and Jett Williams added RBI doubles in the inning to make it 5-1.
Jupiter rallied back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan McCants homered off Mets starter Jawilme Ramirez to make it 5-2. Ian Lewis followed with a triple and scored on a Jacob Reimer error at third base. Jorge Caballero kept the inning alive with a RBI single to cut the Mets lead to 5-4.
Jupiter loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but reliever Brian Gursky entered and struck out McCants before getting Lewis on a comebacker to end the threat and keep the lead.
The Mets appeared to break the game open in the top of the seventh when Jefrey De Los Santos launched a three-run homer to make it 8-4. It was De Los Santos' second home run of the season.
The Hammerheads rallied again by scoring three times before making an out against Gursky in the last of the seventh. Sanoja tripled and Caballero worked a walk. Brett Roberts bashed a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch to trim the Mets advantage to one.
With the bases empty and no outs, Gursky bounced back to strike out Cameron Barstadt, retire Chase Luttrell on a comebacker and strike out Tanner Allen to end the game.
Ramirez received a no decision after pitching 4.2 innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) and did not walk a batter. He struck out three.
Tilien went 2 for 3 with a double, walk and two runs scored.
The Mets (3-4) and Hammerheads (3-4) continue their six-game series on Saturday with game 5. First pitch from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is 4 p.m.
