NY Post: Mets grind out tough 11-inning win over Phillies to stop three-game skid. "There was an Edwin Diaz blown save at the beginning of the set and another one at the end, but the difference on Thursday was the Mets had an extra-inning rally awaiting to propel them from the dumpster. J.D. Martinez delivered a go-ahead base hit, and Jose Alvarado’s wild pitch later helped send the Mets to a 6-5 victory over the Phillies in 11 innings at Citizens Bank Park."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Jorge Lopez shut the door in the 10th inning and Jake Diekman got a strikeout with the tying run on third base as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 6-5, Thursday night in Philadelphia. The victory gave the Mets their first win in the finale of back-to-back, home-and-home, two-game series between NL East rivals."

NY Post: Mets’ Edwin Diaz won’t use being out for year as reason for closing woes. "Diaz entered in the ninth inning with the Mets holding a one-run edge and lost a 10-pitch battle to Brandon Marsh, who walked. Diaz then airmailed a wild pitch that moved Marsh to second. After a strikeout, Diaz allowed Bryson Stott’s ground ball to find a hole in the right side, which drove in the tying run."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets eke out win over Phillies to end skid despite another Edwin Diaz blown save. "The Mets scored two runs, including their last, on wild pitches. Harrison Bader entered as a pinch runner in the sixth and wound up with two significant hits, an RBI single in the eighth and double in the 11th. Francisco Lindor went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts to drop his average to .194."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets blow two leads before outlasting Phillies in extra innings. "Trying to change their fate after losing the last three to the Phillies and five of their last six (all against NL East opponents), the Mets took a 2-0 lead off right-hander Taijuan Walker, with Alonso hitting his 10th home run of the season in the first and Brett Baty scoring Starling Marte on a double in the second inning."

Anthony DiComo Metrs.com: "It was, at times, an ugly affair. But it also showcased the type of chutzpah the Mets will need if they intend to make good on their season-long goals."

1971

Ralph Garr ties a major league record for the round-trippers in extra innings, going deep in the 10th frame and the 12th with a walk-off homer against the Mets in the Braves' 4-3 victory. The Atlanta left-fielder called the 'Road Runner' by his teammates, is the fourth player to accomplish the feat and the first to do so since 1966, when New York's Art Shamsky went yard in the 10th and 11th in a losing cause for the Reds at Crosley Field.

1973

At Anaheim Stadium, a horrific injury dampens Bobby Valentine's promising major league career when his spikes get caught in the outfield's chain-link fence attempting to catch a home run ball hit by Dick Green. The 23 year-old speedster, who had started the season hitting .400 in April, suffers a multiple compound leg fracture and will miss the rest of the season, eventually finishing his playing days as a utility player with the Padres, Mets, and Mariners.

1979

The Phillies beat the Cubs in a fifty-hit slugfest in the Windy City, 23-22. The 11 home runs hit in the game tie a major league mark, shared by Chicago and their opponents 1967 Reds and 1977 Mets, while playing in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

1985

The Rangers fire skipper Doug Rader and replace him with the Mets' third-base coach Bobby Valentine. Before returning to New York in 1996 to manage his former team, 'Bobby V' will compile a 581-605 record (.490) during his eight seasons in Texas.

Baseball Reference:

2001Mets free agent acquisition Steve Trachsel becomes the first pitcher in franchise history to give up four home runs in an inning, pitching himself out of the starting rotation in the process (one day later, he'll be off the roster altogether, off to Norfolk for a three-week Triple A stint). To be fair, the Met bullpen does not exactly cover itself in glory either, with Rick White and John Franco each contributing 4 runs to San Diego's 15-run total; an uncharacteristically economical Franco accomplishes all this in one third of an inning. The one Met bright spot is the performance turned in by a newcomer assigned mop-up duty in the 9th, super sub Desi Relaford, who moves over from SS to make the only mound appearance of his major league career. Sporting a tailing change-up and a fastball, which at 91 MPH is about 5 MPH faster than anything Trachsel was able to muster, Desi fans the opposing pitcher, then induces two consecutive Padres to fly out to the deepest part of the park.

2009:  In a 2 - 0 win by the Giants over the Mets, New York hurler Mike Pelfrey balks 3 times. It had been 15 years since Al Leiter was the last pitcher to have three balks in a game.
