Press Release: Mets sign LHP Sean Manaea, Diego Castillo DFA'd "The New York Mets today announced the club has signed left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea to a two-year contract with a player opt-out after the 2024 season. In a corresponding move, infielder Diego Castillo (claimed off waivers last week) has been designated for assignment...Manaea, 31, established a career-high strikeout rate (9.8 K/9) in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants as he appeared in a career-high 37 games (10 starts). He had a 3.43 ERA (23 ER/60.1 IP) over 17 second half appearances."
1/12/2024: Mets Roster Moves - Claim Max Kranick, DFA Cooper Hummel, sign LHP Danny Young to a minor deal. "Mets claim: RHP Max Kranick off waivers from Pittsburgh. As the 40 man roster was full, they designated outfielder/catcher Cooper Hummel (a recent waiver claim) for assignment...Mets sign: LHP Danny Young to a minor league contract with an invite to major league Spring Training...Danny will turn 30 in May. He was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2015, 8th round. He saw time in the majors last year with the Braves and in 2022 with the Braves and Mariners. Other than one start in 2015, all of his appearances have been in relief."
Baseball America: One MLB Sleeper Prospect For Each Organization In 2024. For the Mets they have "Branny De Oleo, SS The 18-year-old shortstop was one of the Mets’ most pleasant developmental stories in 2023 while making his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League. De Oleo hit .313/.403/.476 in 46 games, showing high-end bat-to-ball skills—he struck out just 9% of the time—and the type of athleticism and body projection to add power to his game. He has the range, arm and instincts to stick at shortstop as he develops." (Subscription required)
MLB.com: Each organization's top international prospect. For the Mets they have: "Luisangel Acuña, SS/2B..."The Mets covered $35 million of Max Scherzer’s remaining contract to pick up Acuña as the prospect return in last year’s Deadline blockbuster. Originally signed by Texas for $425,000 in July 2018, the reigning NL MVP’s younger brother is a career .289 hitter in the Minor Leagues and has stolen 40-plus bags in three straight seasons, topping out with 57 thefts between a pair of Double-A clubs in 2023. While the power still needs to come, the 21-year-old could be the future of second base in Queens."
